Ok, Take two:
Readers,
Let me start this journal by saying that politically speaking, I'm about as far as you can get on the left without getting onto that part of the scale that just says, "Here there be dragons." I did, in fact, vote for Obama on election day last year. At first, I was truly excited that there was someone in the oval office that had a good head on his shoulders and wouldn't try to make a slap in the face feel like a sensual massage (coughcoughpatriotactcoughcoughfreespeech zonescoughcough).
That being said,
[link]WHAT THE FUCK, OBAMA?!
For those of you too lazy to read the whole article in that link, our president has passed into law new hate crime legislation so that anybody that acts violently against homosexuals, bisexuals, transgendered and other people that those on the other side of the political spectrum call "Queer" will receive additional punishment added on to the assault charges.
STOP! Right there! You! Yes, you! I see you about to write a comment calling me an intolerant homophobe or a hypocrite and let me just stop you right there and remind you that I'm one of those far left wingers. I believe in equality and because of that I'm for gay rights. The thing is that for the very reason that I want gay marriage to be legal I am opposed to hate crime legislation.
Explanation tiem!
Hate crimes do nothing to actually reduce the amount bigotry or even come close to stopping people from committing violent crimes on the basis of intolerance for their target's race/religion/orientation/whatever. If you have it in your head to beat the living day lights out of another human being and the regular amount of punishment from the law isn't going to stop you, why would the threat of another couple of years in jail suppress that urge? All it does is tell the bigots that they are right; they are people that are drastically different from the rest of us. So much so that they must have their own special laws in place to protect them.
If a man beats another man to death for sleeping with his wife than is it not because of his hatred for that man? If a man defiles a government building, than is it not for his hatred of the government? Why do some groups get special protection?
We are either all equal under the law, or none of us are.
Think about it,
I-V
PS. Anyone that wants to do the thing I mentioned in my last journal entry, check it out there. I'll do the Q&A next time.
PPS. Zuki, shut up. I can precognitively sense your smugness. Just stop it. Bad Zuki. Bad.
